Normally IP CCTV Cameras send a constant video-stream to one server or PC on the same network. The cameras do not do 'any thinking work', but the server /PC handles all intelligence, processing, recording and live-view generation tasks. This brings limitations and disadvantages:
Limited Processing Power of PC: Have you ever tried to watch High Definition Movies on a standard PC? Well, you can see how the processor just manages to handle the processing of that one stream. Mobotix Cameras provide resolutions up to 6 Megapixel per camera. How do we get our one PC to habdle all those streams? ... We Don't :-) . Every one Mobotix IP Camera has got their own dedicated processor in-built into it, as well as a backup DVR and a solid event recognition system. The storage device does not even need to be a PC with processor at all, but can be a Network-Attacked-Storage-Device (Hard Drive with IP Address). Now we can record High Definition Video Streams, literally without limitations to number.
Bandwith: Event-Driven Recording is the keyword! Instead of having continuous high frame-rate streams cumbering the entire companies network and also seriously limiting the maximum number of usuable cameras, Mobotix IP Cameras can be configured to only record when certain defined events occur. You thought this is what all IP CCTV Systems do? No - There is a big difference; Standard IP CCTV Systems record higher frame-rates upon events, but need to be supplied these streams at all time, so the bandwith is not freed up outside of event conditions. Mobotix De-Centralised CCTV Cameras only send (if configured accordingly) upon the occurance of the defined event - drastically reducing storage and bandwith requirements.
Thank you. This is helpful. How many ip megapixel cameras on average frame rates can be run on a centralized recording system and what is the limit with decetralized solutions? Many thanks.
There are literally no camera limitations limitations for the Mobotix decentralised system. Now - theoretically also a non-centralised system 'can' be expanded without limitation to number - BUT the hardware, software and installation/configuration cost to make this possible will be immense.
One could calculate though that one server or PC could handle up to 30 (on low frame rate/ low resolution maybe 40) cameras on a centralised system.
A de-centralized CCTV System with event-driven recording management inside the intelligent cameras could easily handle up to a hundred... but the Mobotix Control Centre and Cameras furhtermore alow the utilisation of NAS (Network Attached Storage devices) without the need of operating system and license requiring servers.
The other factor to keep in mind is that the number of cameras can reduced to about 50% on average, making use of the 180/360 degree, panorama and double camera head features in Mobotix Security Cameras.
